NEW KIT: The Picture of Dorian Gray

The 1/8 scale (Aurora-sized of course!) model kit is now available from Escape Hatch Hobbies. All parts are 3D-printed, with the Medina portrait on glossy paper. The kit is priced at $125 plus $14 shipping in the United States. Payment by PayPal, check or money order. We’ll also sell outside the United States but shipping will be adjusted as necessary.

If interested, please message Escape Hatch Hobbies or email info@escapehatchhobbies.com.

Ten of the kits are available to ship within a week, probably sooner. More are coming quickly.

PLEASE NOTE THAT FOR NOW, THIS KIT IS NOT AVAILABLE THROUGH THE ESCAPE HATCH WEBSITE. It will not be offered indefinitely, although we’re also not putting a strict cap on production. For now, Escape Hatch will produce enough of them to fill initial demand plus a few extras. Once those sell out, we cannot promise they will be available again soon.

THE BUILDUPS: Escape Hatch’s friends Kurt Piepenburg and Rob Mattison were the first two to paint this kit, and each approached the piece in his own unique way. Kurt, as always, brings a dazzling blend of colors and an unusual ability to make the pieces look like an actual painting on canvass, no matter what angle you see it. Rob’s more down-to-earth approach shows us how Dorian might have appeared in real life. A big thanks to both of them bringing theirr modeling and painting artistry to this kit!

BACKGROUND ON THE KIT: I worked to bring three-dimensional life to the painting artist Ivan Le Lorrine Albright created for the classic 1945 motion picture, directed by Albert Lewin and starring Hurd Hatfield in the title role. The film also features a young Angela Lansbury. It was based on Oscar Wilde’s story of a man who holds onto his beauty while a portrait of him reflects the toll of his age and debauchery.

Two paintings of the character Dorian Gray were created for THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY, and both were shown in blazing Technicolor in what was otherwise a black-and-white movie.

Albright’s “Picture of Dorian Gray” was particularly highlighted at the end of the film. The American artist painted and altered the picture while the movie was being made to allow it to represent Dorian Gray’s character development. It is now part of the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. The institute offers a super-high-resolution look at the painting online at https://www.artic.edu/artworks/93798/picture-of-dorian-gray.

The second painting from the film, by Henrique Medina, is also featured in this model kit.
